The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System® (EFTPS) is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, enabling businesses and individuals to pay federal taxes online or by phone. After enrolling and receiving an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and Personal Identification Number (PIN), users can pay any taxes owed to the IRS.

Key Features of EFTPS:

  • Security: EFTPS uses your EIN, PIN, Internet Password, and a secure browser to ensure the safety of your transactions. As of October 19, 2023, Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is required for access, supported by Login.gov and ID.me.

  • Convenience: Payments can be scheduled up to 365 days in advance with 24/7 access from home or office. The system allows easy changes or cancellations, tracks payments with email notifications, and provides a 15-month payment history.

  • Accuracy: Immediate acknowledgment of payments is provided, confirmed by both the system and your bank statement.

  • For Tax Professionals: EFTPS allows tax professionals to manage payments for multiple clients under a single login using the free Batch Provider Software.

Enrollment and Activation:

  • Enrollment Process: Enrollment can take up to five business days and can be completed online at EFTPS.gov or via Customer Service.

  • Activation: Activate your enrollment by phone or online using your EIN, PIN, and set up a password.

Making Payments:

  • Online or Phone Payments: Enter payment details, receive confirmation, and retain the EFT Acknowledgment Number. Payments must be scheduled by 8 p.m. ET the day before the due date to be timely.
